If someone gave me an advice regarding my research, what position do they hold in my paper? Should I include them as an author?
Hi Jassimran, thank you for your question. Acknowledgements are an excellent place to include colleagues who have made contributions such as the one you describe: giving advice, reading and giving notes on a manuscript in preparation, providing helpful discussion on the layout or structure of the future article etc. You can find more details on who should be an author in the 'Definitions of authorship' post of our 'Authorship and Authors’ Responsibilities' module (https://masterclasses.nature.com/courses/28/posts/486).
