Our Experts

Bhramar Mukherjee

Bhramar is the John D. Kalbfleisch Collegiate Professor and Chair at the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She is also Professor at the Department of Epidemiology, and Professor in Global Public Health as well as Research Professor and Core Faculty Member at the Michigan Institute of Data Science. Bhramar serves as the Associate Director for Quantitative Data Sciences at University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center. Her research interests include statistical methods for analysis of electronic health records, studies of gene-environment interaction, Bayesian methods, shrinkage estimation, analysis of multiple pollutants. She has led numerous collaborations in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, reproductive health, exposure science and environmental epidemiology. Bhramar has co-authored more than 300 publications in statistics, biostatistics, medicine and public health and is serving as Principal Investigator on NSF and NIH funded grants. She is the founding director of the University of Michigan’s summer institute on Big Data and a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is the recipient of many awards for her scholarship, service and teaching at the University of Michigan and beyond.

Julienne Stroeve

Julienne is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the field of climate science, studying sea-ice using remote sensing, climate change and its impacts on native communities. She received her PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado Boulder and became a research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Today, Julienne is a Professor of Polar Observation & Modelling at UCL and holds a Senior Canada 150 Research Chair at the University of Manitoba. She has successfully secured funding from a variety of the most prestigious funders in the highly competitive field of climate science, such as NASA, the NSF and NERC. The work she has undertaken during these funded projects has not only contributed to the scientific community with publications in Science, Nature Climate Change and Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, but has been featured in numerous magazines, radio shows and television documentaries.

Magdalena Skipper

Magdalena is the Editor in Chief of Nature and Chief Editorial Advisor for Nature Research. Her considerable experience in science communication comes as a result of the high profile roles she has held, having been Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Genetics, Senior Editor for genetics and genomics at Nature and Editor in Chief of Nature Communications. Magdalena is a geneticist by training, obtaining her PhD from the University of Cambridge before working as a postdoctoral fellow at the Imperial Cancer Research fund. Both as a researcher and in her roles at Springer Nature, she has delivered numerous presentations, including at the World Science Forum, the Global Bioeconomy Summit and Tencent WE Summit. Magdalena is passionate about transparent science and providing clarity in science communication, as well as helping the development of early career researchers.

David Payne

David joined Springer Nature in 2016 as Nature’s Chief Careers Editor and his role now also includes Supplements. David’s journalism career began in 1990 on local newspapers. He worked for the UK GP magazine Pulse, and Nursing Times as deputy editor, and then worked at the Food Standards Agency, a UK government department, where he managed its website and print publications. Prior to joining Springer Nature, David was digital editor for the British Medical Journal, where he implemented a full online-first publishing model. David has a postgraduate diploma in journalism from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
